Man falls to his death after foot chase with police, authorities say

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the death of a man that hopped a railing and fell to his death in Hudson County Tuesday while fleeing from police, officials announced Friday.
Officers from the Guttenberg Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance at 68th Street and Bellevue Avenue at 11:02 p.m. Wednesday night and were provided with a description of the people involved and that one person had a gun, officials from the Attorney General’s Office said Friday in a press release.
Officers located one of the suspected men in the area of 7000 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, officials said.
After a foot chase, the man climbed over a railing near an adjacent building and fell to his death over an embankment, authorities said.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene but the man was declared dead at the scene, officials said.
A gun was recovered from the man, authorities said, and no further details on the incident and investigation were released Friday.
The man was not identified by authorities Friday.
The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability investigates all deaths after encounters with law enforcement officials acting in their official capacity under a 2019 law.
The law requires that investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if evidence supports the return of an indictment, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing, according to authorities.
